CLUTCH - ADJUSTMENT & REPLACEMENT

A clutch that slips during normal driving, even if only occasionally, should be replaced if self adjusting or adjusted correctly if a an older non self adjusting type.

Symptoms of a problem with your clutch are:
The engine can then speed up or slow down without any change in the speed of the car - a slipping /worn clucth
When you press the accelerator the engine's RPMs increase but not the speed of the car
Problems engaing gears during a gear change
Burning smell or smoke which can be caused by a worn clutch beeing excessivley "ridden"
Clutch pedal is hard to depress, or does not spring back up

EXHAUST - REPAIR REPLACEMENTS

Your car's exhaust system will help your car run at its peak potential and with a minimum of environmental impact. Exhaust sytems which are not proerly secured can result in an MOT fail. If you leave a minor exhaust problem unattended to then it can cause more damage in the longer term. Get exhaust system problems fixed quickly.

Common problems are:
Worn Rubber Gaskets - Dry-rotted gaskets can allow corrosive gases to seep in and slowly destroy your catalytic converter, which is indicated by a rotten egg/sulfur odour.
Cracked / Drying Exhaust hangers and support brackets- Rubber exhaust hangers are susceptible to drying and eventually breaking. This is caused by engine heat, environmental conditions and chassis flex.
Exhaust manifold gasket blowing- if the gasket is worn, some dangerous fumes, including carbon monoxide could be leaking into your car
Corroded silencer - the silencer which is most likely to be corroded from the inside (not outside) by acidic moisture which can build up on the silencer. If your exhaust is making a loud noise it is most likely your silencer has corroded and needs replacing.

Free Exhaust check: If you are not sure if you have a problem with your exhaust, then ask us to carry out a check for you. We will carry out a full check of your system to indetify any issues.

CAMBELT - REPLACEMENTS

The cambelt (or timing belt) is one of the most crucial components of your engine, and over time, can become damaged or worn.

A broken Cambelt will cause catastrophic failure of your engine:
The cambelt, also known as the timing belt, is one of the most crucial bits of kit in the engine. It controls the timing and sequencing of the opening and closing of the valves to the cylinders in the car's engine.

If it breaks, it can cause a lot of damage to your engine, and result in very costly repairs.

Cambelt Check: There is no hard and fast rule for when to change a cambelt, other than the manufacturers time based or milage based change. If you are not sure when your car needs to have a cambelt replacement then come in to see us. We can quickly check to see when you car needs a new cambelt.

STARTER MOTOR - REPLACEMENT

Your car’s starter motor is a powerful electric motor which turns the engine over to start engine combustion process before it can continue by itself. When the ignition is turned the starter motor activates and this then rotates the engine's flywheel which then turns the engine over.

Signs of a failed Starter Motor:
If the starter motor on your car or van fails, you will probably hear a clicking noise when you turn the key. That is the sound of the motor actuating, but not turning. You can get a car with a manual gearbox going with a bump start, but it will need to be replaced as soon as possible.

ALTERNATORS - REPLACEMENT

The alternator keeps the battery charged. If the alternator goes bad the battery will quickly be drained and all power lost.

Signs that your alternator may need replacing are:
Difficulty starting
Dimmed accessory lights
Dead battery
Smell of burning rubber - the alternator belt is sticking or worn
Grinding noise for the alternator - prbably due to a worn alternator bearing
